CONTEXT
In a future war fought over European values, a mother loses her son. Alone in her empty house, she begs both God and the devil to bring him back. As memories of her son unfold, she begins to question whether he has returned or whether grief is playing tricks on her.
Conceived by Christian Lollike, Skæbnen originated as part of Copenhagen Phil’s concert series of four newly written melodramas. The original performance premiered in October 2025, starring Sofie Gråbøl with music composed by Rasmus Zwicki.
SOLUTION
Exit Stage brings the story into virtual reality, combining Sofie Gråbøl’s dramatic performance with Rasmus Zwicki’s original composition to create an intimate, immersive experience.
Through a VR headset, audiences follow the mother through her empty home as fragmented memories reveal her son’s decision to go to war and the loss that followed. The nonlinear narrative invites viewers to piece together the story while questioning what is real and what exists only in the mother’s mind.
IMPACT
Skæbnen explores how virtual reality can expand traditional theatre and musical storytelling by placing audiences directly inside a character’s emotional world.
By combining performance, spatial storytelling and music, the experience creates a new way to engage with themes of grief, memory and loss, allowing audiences to interpret the story from within rather than simply observing it.
