XTREME | IT University, Copenhagen

How can the experience of art, music performances, and live concerts be democratized and overcome access difficulties from disability or socio-economic disparity?

The project Mixed Reality Environment for Immersive Experience of Art and Culture (XTREME) tackles these issues by exploring the potential of mixed reality technology for live content distribution.

XTREME is built on an innovative methodology, uniting computer science and engineering with the humanities and social sciences. Instead of requiring physical presence at a venue, the project will employ MR to transport concerts and performances to remote settings while retaining their immersive qualities. This virtual approach also facilitates shared experiences within social circles to foster community, break geographic barriers, benefit those with limited access, and expand audiences for artists worldwide.

With a consortium of 14 partners from the creative and cultural sectors and leading researchers and scientists, XTREME is primed to catalyze research, innovation, and transformation within the XR technology domain. Khora will support the project with expertise from XR production and pilot content for testing various use cases.

The project is led by the IT University in Copenhagen. Among the partners are Aalto University, Immersive Stories, the MUNCH Museum in Oslo, Finish National Opera and Ballet, Twente University, Marionette, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Leibniz University Hannover, University of Limerick, University of Nottingham, 4DSound Technologies, and Bolt Virtual.

By effectively bridging the gap between theoretical insights and tangible applications, its impact aims to encompass technological advancements, commercial innovations, and societal change by promoting inclusive XR experiences within Europe’s vital music sector.
