What is Comfort XR?

Comfort XR is a simple and effective solution to distract children during needle procedures. The solution offers specially designed games to activate multiple centers of the brain simultaneously and thereby remove the anticipation of pain and discomfort. The games are developed in collaboration with experts on pain distraction from The Knowledge Center for Children’s Pain at Rigshospitalet and are developed for both sitting and lying down procedures.

        Validation

Comfort XR started back in 2017 as part of a research project about utilizing VR as pain distraction for children. The research project was lead by Dr. Søren Walther-Larsen from The Knowledge Center for children’s pain at Rigshospitalet. In collaboration with the talented doctors and nurses from the center the first game, Seagull Splash, was developed to be part of a clinical trial. The clinical trial was run with 64 children and results concluded, that VR is an excellent form of distraction on par with other great methods of distraction. A further advantage is, that VR shows higher satisfaction scores when used during needle procedures.

Immersive Virtual Reality for Pediatric Procedural Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Pain management in children often is inadequate, and the single most common painful procedure in children who are hospitalized is needle procedures. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising and engaging intervention that may help to decrease anxiety and pain in children undergoing painful procedures. Our aim for this study is to investigate patient satisfaction and pain reduction by using a three-dimensional VR interactive game as a distraction.

        Client’s Testimony

”At the municipal dental care in Ringkøbing-Skjern, we have tested VR headsets for our patients.

We have adapted the VR headset to best suit our work settings, so they can be used when the patient is lying down.

The VR headsets has been well received by both children and parents. Most people find it fun to try, and almost forget they are at the dentist. We have tested them for all types of treatments. In some situations the treatment is easier, as the VR headset minimizes the patients need for a break during the procedure. Many times they enjoy it so much that they find it difficult to let go of the headset when the procedure is over.

All in all, it has been well received by both children, parents and therapists.”
