Tales of a Nomadic City | Christian Vium & Mohamed Ould Lemine
Client: Christian Vium, Mohamed Ould Lemine
Platform: Pico / Quest
The challenge: The multiplatform exhibition “Tales of a Nomadic City” focuses on the capital of Mauritania, Nouakchott, and its rapid growth. Since 1958, the city has expanded from 500 inhabitants to more than 1 million, leading to increasing pressures and challenges for its development. This growth is backed by the UN, which predicts that 90% of global urbanization in the next 30 years will take place in Africa.
The task: Through a combination of a VR prototype, an XR interactive platform, VR short films, archive footage, film footage, photographs, sound, a physical exhibition and printed publications, the exhibition introduces the audience to the people of Nouakchott who have left their mark on the history and culture of this unique city in recent years.
The solution: Khora contributed to the production of the VR experience that portrays a journey through time, collapsing temporal boundaries while inviting viewers to witness the city’s extraordinary transformation through the ages. The experience features Mohamed, a former nomad living on the outskirts of Nouakchott. The film explores the remarkable evolution the city has undergone in its short lifetime and invites residents to share their personal stories as part of building and developing the city’s identity.
