Novavi – VR Therapy for Inmate Rehabilitation

Client: Novavi

Target Medium: Khora Exposure (Pico G2+)

Challenge: Inmates in remand custody face significant isolation due to increased security measures and staffing shortages, limiting access to group therapy and communal activities. This isolation exacerbates anxiety and stress, particularly concerning recidivism upon release or transfer. Traditional therapeutic methods are less effective in these restrictive environments, creating a need for innovative solutions to prepare inmates for transitions and prevent relapse.

Task: We aim to develop and implement a VR-based intervention for relapse prevention that integrates into individual therapy sessions. By training Novavi’s therapists to effectively use VR technology in a therapeutic context and creating necessary materials, such as manuals and training guides, we will standardize the intervention. Additionally, we will collaborate with the criminal justice system to ensure security protocols are met and facilitate the integration of VR technology within prisons.

Solution: Introduce Virtual Reality as a therapeutic tool to simulate high-risk situations, allowing inmates to experience craving triggers and practice coping strategies in real-time. This reduces anxiety during transitions and provides therapists with deeper insights. Collaboration with the criminal justice system ensures security and adapts the intervention to the prison environment.

This project is a prime example of how virtual reality, can be used to encounter concrete challenges in the social sector.
